We’d like to give a big shout out to our structural engineer, Ed Medlock, and metal worker and artist, Shawn Oldham, for their extraordinary assistance in making this bridge a reality. Both have become stand-out mentors and friends to our studio, donating their time and knowledge to give back to the community.
Ed Medlock has come in to give us lessons on structures, teaching us how to design a bridge from a structural standpoint. After all, we do want this guy to stand on August 2. As we delved into design, he helped us problem solve to help imagination meet reality. He’s gone over all of our permit drawings, verifying the structural systems are sound and giving each his professional stamp of approval. He’s dealt with our calls, questions, and curiosities and we cannot thank you enough Ed!
For the past two weeks, we’ve invaded Shawn Oldham’s metal shop. He’s graciously allowed us not only to use his work space, but also given us lessons on welding, grinding, and various other metal shop tools and techniques. For those that might find concern in a group of students welding a bridge together themselves, not to worry, Shawn has overseen each structural weld himself. Shawn has also been invaluable in his design critiques and advice. Thank you Shawn!
